Due to the cancellation of HSE schools on Jan. 24, the district decided that students must complete an e-learning day through assignments on Canvas. This stands in place of having to come to school on May 29.

“I really don’t like the idea behind these E-learning assignment,” sophomore Madi Hale said. “I would have rather us just come in for an extra day because that would have been so much easier. It’s the end of the year so I barely have the motivation to finish all of these.

Other students see these assignments as an extra opportunity to gain points before the transcripts for the semester are finalized.

“I don’t think these assignments are the best idea but I like the fact that we can get an extra grade,” junior Shelby Ebert said. “But for the people that don’t want to do these assignments, it could hurt their grade. I don’t think that’s very fair.”

Students were required to complete all of the assignments by midnight on Monday May 7. For every assignments that is not turned in, the student will receive an unexcused absence for that class.

“It stresses me out, because I already have finals to study for and other homework to focus on,” Hale said. “I hate having to do six assignments on top of all of that.”

The state of Indiana has around 170 public and private schools that utilize E-Learning days, according to the website edscoop. Many districts have these days on a regular basis and not just for make ups. They allow the students to spend their day at home working on these assignments, rather than coming into school.
