Denison University is offering students a chance to attend the Reynold’s Young Writing Workshop. It is open to any student that that is motivated to write and has completed either their sophomore or junior year.

“Students should apply to the program if they love to write and are excited about the prospect of connecting with a small group of like-minded writing friends,” program director Margot Singer said via email. “They should also apply to the program if they want to get a feel for what life on a small liberal arts college campus is like.”

Students must complete an online application, provide a creative writing sample that is up to 10 pages of fiction, poetry or nonfiction and an online recommendation form from a teacher or counselor. The application fee is $25.

The workshop will be held about four hours away at Denison University in Granville, Ohio from June 17 to June 24.

Students will participate in workshops taught by the faculty members that will help students recognize their strengths and work on their weaknesses. In the past this has included writing exercises, reading assignments and discussions on how to craft a writing piece.

The fee for the workshop is estimated to be $1,300 including housing on campus and meals for the eight days students spend there. The program’s official website also says that they offer financial aid to anyone who needs it. A form to receive this aid must be filled out and included with the original online application.

“The eight day program is busy and intense,” Singer said. “There’s not a ton of time to sit and write, so much of the skill improvement happens afterward.”

Guidance office has more information for any student interested. Applications will remain available until the deadline on March 4.  Acceptance notifications are expected to be sent out in early April. They will only be accepting 48 students in total.

“Year after year, participants tell us how much they learned and how motivated they feel to continue writing,” Singer said.
